English-born, Oxford-graduate Mark Haddon began his writing career in 1987 with the release of the children's book Gilbert's Gobstopper. His most well-known children's books are the Agent Z series. To date, he has authored 24 books. In addition to being a book and screenplay writer, he is also an illustrator. Haddon reveals his first novel in adult fiction, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. In this tale, set in Swindon, England, a teenage boy comes across his neighbors dog dead in her front yard. He tries to unravel the mystery of who killed the dog, but he ends up unraveling the truths in his own life, as well. In 2012, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time was adapted as a stage play and premiered in London's Royal National Theater.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time received criticism by the community of Galveston, Texas because of curse words and a mention of God not existing. Regardless, the book went on to win numerous awards. In 2003, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time was the recipient of the Guardian Children's Fiction Prize, Costa Book Prize of the Year, Commonwealth Writer's Prize, Book Trust Teenage Fiction Award, and the Whitbread Book of the Year Award. In 2004, it received the Boeke Prize and the Waverton Good Read Award. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time was considered to be strong and poignant by School Library Journal. Dr. Alex McClimens wrote in his review that it is a must-read for anyone interested in autism spectrum disorders.
