Chapter 1
Mental mathematics
While physics and mathematics may tell us how the universe began,
they are not much use in predicting human behavior
because there are far too many equations to solve.
I'm no better than anyone else at understanding
what makes people tick, particularly women.
Stephen Hawking
If a man's wit be wandering, let him study the mathematics.
Francis Bacon
Mental mathematics is something that I have learned since when I was 10 years.
I used to recite the 12 times multiplication tables by hard and just for fun add in the 13 times table.
It helps greatly when you know 7 x 7 =49 and 13 x 13 =169 by hard.
If you wish you can even learn up to 20 times table but that is just an exercise.
To really know mathematics you really must have an interest in mathematics and its basic principles.
For example in mathematics always multiply and divide before adding or subtracting unless there are brackets involved.
After all you use it every day in buying things for money so you should know what would be your change after a purchase.
The major reason people in general say they ‘hate mathematics’ is not that they really hate mathematics but that they hate failure.
They equate mathematics with failure.
People generally equate mathematical ability with intelligence.
If you are good at maths, you are intelligent; if you do poorly and struggle you are not so smart.
Students not only believe this about others, they believe it about themselves.
No one likes to feel that he or she is unintelligent, especially in front of a class of friends and peers.
The most certain way to get students to enjoy mathematics is to enable them to succeed.
This is the object of my methods, to enable those who have failed in the past to succeed.
It is one thing to tell a student,
‘You can do it’.
It is quite another to get the student to believe it.
What is mental Mathematics?
Mental mathematics is where you use your brain mentally to get the answers in questions on mathematics
It helps you increase concentration
It helps to form the memory of your brain
It increases the brain capability to remember several ideas at once.
People at any age learn to deal with different concepts simultaneously.
Mental calculation will permit you to develop a ‘sense’ for numbers.
You will learn to be capable to better estimate answers.
Learning mathematics helps the person to have an ability to think laterally.
The methods taught in Mental Mathematics will help you develop capability to t o use other ways of thinking and doing your answers.
The learning person will learn to look for non-standard methods of problem-solving and calculations.
Mathematical knowledge increases your confidence and self-esteem.
These methods will give you the confidence in your mental thinking, intelligence and problem-solving capabilities.
Chapter 2
Addition
Here is a basic rule for mental addition:
1. To add 9, add 10 and subtract 1;
2. To add 8, add 10 and subtract 2;
3. To add 7, add 10 and subtract 3,
And so on.
How would you add 45 plus 9 in your head?
The easy way would be to add 10 (to make 55), andtake away 1.
The answer is 54.
Using smaller numbers, you can add 2 rows of number at a time

The normal arithmetic is that you will add from right to left.
Example:
456
567
1023
You add 6 + 7 =13, then 5+6 =11, then 4+5=9
You will have carry 10 from 11 to 13 making it 123 and the 9 from 900 to 123 to get 1023
In mental mathematics, you add from left to right:
4+5=9, then 5+6=11 and 6+7=13
900+110=1010+13=1023
