As you debark your ship, one look at Roseau close up and you know that you are no longer on the beaten path. Dominica is a third world island. This island is not for everyone. A small group of Carib inhibit the island along with some French and English. Most are basically descendants of the slaves brought from Africa in the 18th century. Even though there is much poverty here, people living on the island are very laid back and happy and you will find them very hospitable.
The island has one of the lowest crime rates in the Western Hemisphere. They also enjoy one of the longest life spans. Perhaps living off fish, fruits and nuts found in and around the island is why many live to be centenarians. (I assume the low crime rate could also lead to a longer life.)
Roseau remains an old time colonial capitol. Maybe many cruise ship visitors do not know what that phrase (old colonial capitol) means. It means the ramshackle West Indian colonial houses with louvered windows, intricate fretwork, and sagging second-floor balconies held up over narrow streets by stilts. So those of you who are used to the Disney version of destinations should know that the town is poor and dirty rather than colorful and atmospheric. But know too, that the people here are lovely and friendly. And this island is a fabulous chance for the study of cultures; for the adventurous.. extreme sports, and for the naturalists, the gorgeous incomparable beauty of lakes, rainforests and mountains. Trust me... you will not forget this experience!
