This classic article was adapted from a paper read at a symposium on experimental approaches to personality assessment at the American Psychological Association meetings in New york in 1957. The discussion within the article draws primarily upon the contention that in personality theory a ubiquitous and fundamental distinction may be drawn between the interpretation of behavior in terms of (a) the content of "needs" and of cognitive structures generally and in terms of (b) characteristic styles of response and action.
