Ise- Jingu, the most prominent Shinto shrine in Japan,Ise- Jingu is the sacred place where kami(super natural forces and being) of the sun and nature reside. In Naiku, Kotaijingu, the most revered of all kami, Amaterasu-Omikami, is enshrined. In Geku, Toyouke-Daijingu, Toyouke-Omikami is enshrined. Jingu consists of 125 jinja(shrine) with Naiku and Geku culminating as the head jinja.
For over 2,000 years, more than 1,000 sacred rituals and ceremonies have been held each year in this location. During the last 1,300 years, Shikinen Sengu, Periodic Relocation and Reconstruction of Ise-Jingu, has been carried out every 20 years. It is considered the most important ritual in the country, where the all the sacred buildings are reconstructed and holy vestures and treasures are renewed.
Thus, the Japanese peoples' mindset can be seen in these traditions handed down with utmost care for centuries and in these rituals carried out solemnly. They are reflections of human bonds, harmony, prayerful attitude and how the Japanese view nature.
When visiting Jingu, one feels the fresh air and magnanimity laden with fragrance from the deep forests. This must be the sacred-power of the kami perceived from the time-honored shrines and the surrounding nature.
