This publication includes research into the football club of Birmingham City whose origins go back to Victorian times. Had it not been for the players' of Small Heath Alliance and Small Heath Football Club, the modern " Blues" team would never have existed in its current form. Author Michael James Talbot, a Birmingham City fan since Christmas 1967, has examined the archived newspapers from the Victorian era and has uncovered the "roots" of his favourite club. The games and the results are collated against their Midlands rivals including Aston Villa, West Bromwich Albion, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Walsall Town Swifts are they all well documented. The events behind the results will take the reader back to the late 19th Century when fierce looking moustachioed men wore knickerbockers and shin pads outside their socks. It is also a social document which covers a unique time when much was achieved in football terms. Many "Brummie" Great-Grandfathers of the current "Blues" supporters would have been excited while watching games at the old Coventry Road ground. Spectators, in their thousands, followed the progress of the Small Heath teams, from the days when they were amateurs to professionalism and to their eventual promotion into the old First Division. The names of the top players may not readily known to the modern supporter but they were strong, powerful personalities and proven stars of great quality in their own right in the eyes of our ancestors. This is a compelling read.
