I retired as an Assistant Field Office Director from the Dept. of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement division after a 31 year career. Recently, I decided to write a story which is loosely based on actual events I was involved in which took place the week following the 9/11 disaster in NYC.
The point of my story is that every day law enforcement officers don’t know what they are heading into when they leave their homes to go to work. They know that once they pin on that badge, put on that bulletproof vest and strap on their weapon, that even though they are hoping for the best, they are expecting the worst. And that is what happens in this story. Unsuspecting Immigration officers find themselves in a situation they may be trained for but never expected to find themselves in!
Considering what is happening around the country these days; people hating on police, 9/11 conspiracy theories, mass shootings, Muslim extremist issues, refugee issues, immigration issues, and the “War on Terrorism”, my story touches in some way or another on all of these subjects. I believe that there would be interest in this story from people who have interest in any one of these issues.
My story is a short, action packed story, and as I said, it is based on factual and real officers who did perform this assignment. I tried to inform the readers a little about each of the officers involved in the story, have the readers experience a little excitement similar to a French Connection or a Clint Eastwood type movie, and included some political intrigue simultaneously, while still remaining on target of the actual work that was accomplished.
