The Reason is a novel about a Christian man named Cecil who is sentenced to serve the remainder of his life in prison for crimes in which he asserts his innocence. The injustice makes God’s fatherly love feel more like child abuse to Cecil, and this seeming betrayal serves only to twist in the proverbial thorn to sword’s depth…forcing Cecil to attempt daring escapes from prison. Cecil is placed in solitary confinement, where his confusion, frustration, and desperation are dramatically intensified. Yet as the decades pass and the bitterness recedes, trust unexpectedly resurfaces. That’s when Cecil lets go to let God, and the light ahead becomes anything but the once perceived train.
