Four years have passed since the ending of the world and the founding of Wolfe's Burrow. Then the unthinkable happens: Wolfe's adopted daughter, Susan, is kidnapped by a gang of slavers. The simmering rage that is always boiling beneath the surface blazes nearly out of control as Wolfe sets out with a small, trusted group of friends, one of them Susan's untested, would-be fianc©, to rescue or avenge, and heaven help anyone who gets in his way. The trail leads them on a long chase, and they have to split up into separate scouting parties to be sure to pick up the trail. Wolfe manages to rescue the girls but is badly wounded in the process. He sends Susan and the girls to meet the rest of the rescue party and send help while he stays behind to fight a nearly hopeless, last-ditch delaying action.
